Short circuit causing explosion

This video, recorded with a fast camera (5000 frames/s), shows the formation of a metal bridge in fusion between two electrodes.

The metallic bridge explosion produces many droplets whose trajectories are analyzed with the TRACK software.

The first difficulty of this video is to use a detection procedure able to face strong spatial inhomogeneity and temporal variations of light intensity. The second one is linked to the small size of tracked structures in an extremely noisy environment. Finally, the tracking algorithm must keep working even in the case of important variations of the dynamics as different as the metal bridge flow or the ejection of several hundreds of fast moving particles.

The TRACK’s tools, more specifically the multi-scale auto-adaptive thresholding technique allows to study the dynamic of the process, the amount of ejected matter and the individual particle kinetics.
